The Achilles tendon is our largest tendon and it is located at the back of our leg and ankle and the tendon attaches to our heel bone and it can cause us pain with every step we take and make wearing shoes severely painful. A sore Achilles tendon can impair our walking, limit our ability to exercise and even make us limp.

Achilles tendon problems may occur as a result of a sports injury (often basketball, running, tennis or volleyball), improper shoes, twisting the ankle or foot, stumbling, falling, a contusion, or simply age.

Achilles tendon issues can be very painful and some people have pain when walking, wearing shoes or even just standing. There may be swelling and in some cases, people will feel an actual lump, “knot” or swelling in the sore area of the tendon.

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon, and can start gradually over many weeks or come on quickly, in just a few hours. This inflammation can become severe and incapacitating. Sometimes the pain is at the back of the heel, while other times, the pain is just above the back of the heel. The painful area may be swollen and very tender to touch. Some people describe this swollen area at the back of the heel as a “pump bump.”

Achilles tendonitis may occur with plantar fasciitis pain or a heel spur and sometimes our podiatrists will need to treat all of these problems to alleviate your pain.

Because we use our Achilles tendon to push our foot off the ground with every step we take, Achilles tendonitis can worsen rapidly and may cause the tendon to tear or rupture.

Achilles Tendon Tear or Rupture

An Achilles Tendon tear is common. Sometimes people tear the tendon and do not even know it. They may just say the back of the tendon is sore or “hurts.” Other people will recall the moment they injured the Achilles tendon and say they felt a “pop” or “snap.”

Athletes are prone to Achilles tendon injury, especially persons who are runners. Some studies show that ten percent of runners will injury their Achilles tendon at some point. Other sports that tend to stress and strain the Achilles tendon include basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and tennis. At Friendly Foot Care we see people from all walks of life with Achilles tendon pain or injury.

Other persons who tear or rupture their Achilles tendon may not even remember an injury. Over time the tendon in some people can just weaken and tear. These types of tears may occur slowly over many days or weeks. In some cases these people do have severe Achilles tendon rupture.

Achilles Tendon Bursitis and Heel Bursitis

Heel bursitis (pump bump) and Achilles tendon bursitis occurs when a small fluid-filled sac at the back of our heel bone becomes irritated and inflamed. Heel bursitis (or a pump bump) and tendon bursitis can be very painful. Bursitis may be associated with Achilles tendonitis or an abnormality of our heel bone such as a heel spur or a heel bone problem called a Haglund’s deformity.

Achilles Tendon Treatment and Achilles Tendon Surgery

It is important to seek treatment for Achilles tendon pain or an Achilles tendon problem as soon as possible, so as to prevent the tendon problem or injury from worsening or even becoming an outright Achilles tendon tear.

The podiatrists at our Northwest Indiana office will thoroughly evaluate the Achilles tendon (and for that matter, your entire foot and ankle). The podiatrist will often x-ray the heel of your foot to make sure there is no bone involvement or a fracture. Fractures of the heel can sometimes mimic an Achilles tendon injury or an Achilles tendon tear. In addition to x-rays, the podiatrist may use diagnostic ultrasound to examine the tendon to see if there is a tear or rupture.

It should be noted that in rare cases, there can be other causes of Achilles tendon pain such as a mass (tumor), pinched nerve or even a blood clot. Since these problems can be extremely serious, it is recommended that anyone with what they believe to be an Achilles tendon injury or problem see us promptly.

Most people with an Achilles tendon injury or problem find that we can alleviate their pain with conservative treatments, such as special braces, therapy and topical medication.

Some people do require Achilles tendon surgery. When needed, Achilles tendon surgery is done on an outpatient basis. Most people who have Achilles tendon surgery by our podiatrist can walk afterwards in a special boot though a small number of people do need to stay off the foot for a period of time. Achilles tendon surgery is not for everyone and has risks.
